Most roles involving regular work with children require the recruiting organisation to consider the appropriate level of criminal-record check. Candidates cannot choose the legal level themselves, and a DBS certificate does not by itself make someone cleared or suitable for a school role.
The organisation requests the eligible check
For standard and enhanced checks, an eligible employer or registered body normally starts the application. The exact check depends on the role and whether it falls within regulated activity. Be cautious of anyone selling a check without first confirming that the role is eligible for it.
Prepare accurate identity information
- Use your current legal name and disclose previous names where requested
- Make sure addresses and dates are complete
- Bring original identity documents through the stated route
- Raise certificate errors promptly
- Keep the certificate secure; it contains sensitive information
Understand the Update Service
The DBS Update Service can allow an organisation to check whether relevant certificate information has changed, but only where the certificate is eligible and the role and workforce match. The organisation still needs your consent and must decide whether the existing certificate is suitable for the new role.
- Check the subscription is active
- Keep the original certificate
- Do not assume every school or role can use it
- Tell the recruiter if your name or relevant details changed
A DBS check is one part of the process
Schools and recruitment businesses may also need identity, right-to-work, employment-history, reference, qualification and role-suitability information. What is required depends on the role and employment route. Ask for a clear list early and do not email sensitive documents to an unverified address.
