Understand the work

What does a Autism Support do?

Autism Support should be individualised. It may help an autistic pupil communicate, understand routines, manage sensory demands, access learning or develop independence.

There is no single autistic profile. Good support follows the pupil's plan, respects their communication and avoids assuming that one visual, sensory or behaviour strategy suits everyone.

Responsibilities can include

  • Use agreed communication and visual supports consistently
  • Prepare for routines, changes and transitions where needed
  • Recognise sensory demands and follow the pupil's support plan
  • Promote participation, choice and independence
  • Share observations with teaching and specialist staff accurately

Not every vacancy includes every responsibility. Read the live job description for the actual pupils, duties and setting.

Role fit

What experience do you need?

Direct autism experience is valuable for many roles, especially where communication or sensory needs are complex. Some employers also consider strong care, childcare or support experience with relevant training.

Candidates should describe the person, communication need, strategy used and outcome without presenting one approach as a universal autism method.

Requirements vary

What qualifications do you need?

A specific autism qualification is not universally mandatory for support work. Employers may prefer autism training, communication approaches, previous SEN experience or personal-care capability depending on the pupils.

Makaton, PECS or visual-support training can be useful when the setting actually uses it. Training should match the role rather than become a list of unrelated certificates.

Practical answers

Autism Support job questions

What does an Autism Support Assistant do?

They provide individualised communication, sensory, routine and learning support based on the pupil's needs and the setting's agreed plan.

Do I need autism experience?

Some vacancies require it, particularly where needs are complex. Others consider related support experience plus credible autism understanding and role-specific training.

Is every autism-support role 1:1?

No. Work may be individual, small-group or class based, and some specialist settings use team support rather than one fixed adult.

Do autism roles involve personal care?

Some do and many do not. Personal care should be stated in the vacancy and supported by the setting's training, policy and safe working arrangements.
