Understand the work

What does a Learning Support Assistant do?

A Learning Support Assistant helps pupils access teaching and make progress without taking over the teacher's role. Support may be delivered across a class, in small groups or with an individual pupil.

LSA work can include differentiation, communication, organisation, confidence and SEN support. The strongest practice builds independence rather than making a pupil dependent on one adult.

Responsibilities can include

  • Reinforce learning activities planned by the teacher
  • Adapt resources and explanations within agreed guidance
  • Support individuals or small groups to participate
  • Notice barriers to learning and share useful observations
  • Work alongside teachers and SENCOs while maintaining pupil independence

Not every vacancy includes every responsibility. Read the live job description for the actual pupils, duties and setting.

Role fit

What experience do you need?

Previous classroom or SEN experience is useful, but some employers consider childcare, tutoring, care, coaching or community-support backgrounds. Evidence of communication, patience and reliable follow-through matters.

Candidates should be able to explain how they supported learning or independence rather than simply saying they helped someone.

Requirements vary

What qualifications do you need?

LSA qualification requirements vary by employer. Some schools ask for English and maths qualifications, a teaching-assistant certificate or previous classroom work; others accept relevant transferable experience.

Specific communication, literacy, numeracy or SEN training is useful only where it matches the pupils and duties in the vacancy.

Practical answers

Learning Support Assistant job questions

What does a Learning Support Assistant do?

An LSA helps pupils access planned learning through explanation, adapted resources, small-group work, communication support and encouragement toward independence.

Is an LSA the same as an SEN Teaching Assistant?

The titles overlap. LSA roles may support broader learning needs, while SEN TA vacancies often identify additional-needs support more explicitly. The actual duties matter more than the label.

Can care experience transfer into LSA work?

It can where it demonstrates communication, patience, safe support and independence. You still need to show how that experience translates into a learning environment.

Do LSAs need a teaching qualification?

No teaching qualification is universally required for LSA roles. Employers set their own essential and preferred criteria.
