What does a SEN Teaching Assistant do?
An SEN Teaching Assistant helps pupils with additional needs take part in learning, communication and school routines. The work can involve individual support, small groups or classroom inclusion under the direction of teaching and SEN staff.
The title covers very different jobs. One vacancy may focus on an EHCP outcome in a mainstream class; another may involve autism, SEMH, communication or complex-needs support in a specialist setting. Judge the actual duties, pupils and support available—not the title alone.
Responsibilities can include
- Support one pupil, a small group or the wider class to access learning
- Follow agreed EHCP outcomes, support plans and classroom strategies
- Adapt communication and resources with guidance from the school team
- Help pupils build participation, regulation and independence
- Record relevant information and raise safeguarding concerns correctly

Role fit
What experience do you need?
Schools often value direct experience supporting children or young people with additional needs, but some vacancies accept transferable care, childcare, youth-work or support experience.
Useful evidence includes calm communication, consistent boundaries, following plans, helping someone participate and working reliably within a team. Employers decide which experience is essential for each vacancy.

What qualifications do you need?
There is no single SEN Teaching Assistant qualification required by every school. Some employers prefer GCSEs, a teaching-assistant qualification or previous school experience; others focus more heavily on relevant support evidence.
Role-specific training in safeguarding, autism, communication, behaviour or personal care can be useful where it matches the actual job. Qualified teaching roles have different requirements.

What does an SEN Teaching Assistant do?
They help pupils with additional needs access learning, communication, routines and participation. The balance between classroom, group and 1:1 support depends on the vacancy.
Do I need previous SEN experience?
Not for every vacancy. Some schools accept strong transferable support experience, while specialist or higher-needs roles may require direct SEN, personal-care, communication or behaviour evidence.
Can I become an SEN Teaching Assistant without qualifications?
Some support vacancies do not require a specific SEN qualification. Schools still set their own essential criteria and expect credible experience, safe judgement and satisfactory vetting.
Do I need a degree?
A degree is not a universal requirement for SEN Teaching Assistant work. It does not replace the specific experience or checks required by the employer.
