What does a Behaviour Mentor do?
A Behaviour Mentor helps pupils re-engage with learning by building dependable relationships, reinforcing clear boundaries and supporting regulation. Good mentoring is consistent and planned; it is not simply removing a pupil from class when behaviour becomes difficult.
Roles differ between mainstream schools, SEMH settings, PRUs and alternative provision. Some focus on individual pupils, while others support transitions, attendance, classroom engagement or wider behaviour systems.
Responsibilities can include
- Build professional relationships without weakening agreed boundaries
- Recognise triggers and use planned regulation or de-escalation approaches
- Help pupils return to learning and participate more consistently
- Follow behaviour, safeguarding and recording procedures accurately
- Work with teachers, pastoral teams and families where the role requires it

Role fit
What experience do you need?
Schools may look for previous behaviour, SEMH, youth-work, mentoring, coaching, care, residential or community experience. What matters is whether you can show calm judgement, consistency and credible examples of engagement.
Confidence alone is not enough. Strong candidates can explain how they reduced escalation, maintained boundaries, followed a plan and kept colleagues informed.
Requirements vary
What qualifications do you need?
There is no single qualification required for every Behaviour Mentor vacancy. Employers may prefer relevant education, youth-work, psychology, behaviour or safeguarding training, but experience and setting fit can carry more weight.
Training in de-escalation, positive behaviour support or trauma-informed practice can help when used within the school's agreed approach. It does not authorise unsupported restraint or replace induction.

What is the difference between a Behaviour Mentor and a Teaching Assistant?
A Teaching Assistant usually centres on access to learning. A Behaviour Mentor focuses more directly on engagement, regulation, boundaries and re-entry to learning, although duties can overlap.
Do Behaviour Mentors work with challenging behaviour?
Often, but the job is not about confrontation. Schools look for people who can understand behaviour, stay regulated, follow plans and reduce escalation safely.
Is youth-work or coaching experience relevant?
It can be, especially when you can evidence professional boundaries, consistent engagement, safeguarding awareness and work with young people who found structured settings difficult.
Do I need restraint training?
Not for every role. Any physical-intervention requirement must be set by the employer, matched to the duties and supported by appropriate training and policy.
