Understand the work

What does a Pastoral Support do?

Pastoral Support helps pupils stay safe, attend, engage and remain connected to education. The role can involve wellbeing conversations, attendance follow-up, behaviour support and coordinated work with teaching or safeguarding teams.

It is not informal counselling. Pastoral staff need clear professional boundaries, accurate records and the judgement to pass concerns to the correct safeguarding lead.

Responsibilities can include

  • Build consistent relationships that support attendance and engagement
  • Notice wellbeing or behaviour concerns and record them accurately
  • Liaise with pupils, colleagues and families where authorised
  • Support agreed interventions, transitions and reintegration plans
  • Escalate safeguarding concerns through the setting's procedure

Not every vacancy includes every responsibility. Read the live job description for the actual pupils, duties and setting.

Role fit

What experience do you need?

Schools may value pastoral, attendance, family-support, youth-work, mental-health, safeguarding or behaviour experience. Strong candidates combine empathy with boundaries and accurate professional communication.

Experience of sensitive conversations is useful only when you can also show confidentiality, escalation and record-keeping within procedure.

Requirements vary

What qualifications do you need?

Requirements vary. Employers may prefer education, youth-work, counselling-awareness, mental-health or safeguarding training, but no single qualification covers every pastoral role.

A counselling course does not make a school pastoral worker a therapist. The role must stay within the school's safeguarding, information-sharing and referral framework.

Practical answers

Pastoral Support job questions

What does school Pastoral Support involve?

It commonly covers attendance, wellbeing, behaviour, engagement and coordinated support, with duties defined by the school's pastoral and safeguarding structure.

Is Pastoral Support a counselling role?

Usually not. Pastoral staff listen and support within professional boundaries, record concerns and refer or escalate when specialist help is needed.

Is family-support experience relevant?

It can be valuable where you can evidence boundaries, accurate communication, safeguarding judgement and work across agencies or school teams.

Do pastoral roles involve safeguarding?

Safeguarding awareness is central, but the exact responsibility depends on the post. Staff must follow the setting's reporting and escalation procedure.
