Understand the work

What does a SEMH Support do?

SEMH Support helps pupils whose social, emotional or mental-health needs affect regulation, relationships, attendance or access to learning. Behaviour may communicate distress, unmet need or difficulty managing the environment.

The work requires consistency rather than power struggles. Support should follow agreed plans, combine empathy with boundaries and help pupils return to learning or participation safely.

Responsibilities can include

  • Build predictable professional relationships and routines
  • Use agreed regulation and de-escalation approaches
  • Recognise behaviour as information without excusing unsafe actions
  • Support engagement, transitions and re-entry to learning
  • Record concerns and work consistently with the wider team

Not every vacancy includes every responsibility. Read the live job description for the actual pupils, duties and setting.

Role fit

What experience do you need?

SEMH schools often value behaviour, mental-health, youth-work, care, residential, mentoring or alternative-provision experience. Evidence of resilience must include calm practice, boundaries and willingness to follow a plan.

Trauma-informed awareness can help candidates understand responses, but it does not replace safeguarding procedure, clinical expertise or role-specific training.

Requirements vary

What qualifications do you need?

There is no single universal SEMH support qualification. Employers may prefer education, mental-health, youth-work, behaviour or therapeutic-awareness training alongside relevant experience.

Any physical-intervention, medication or clinical responsibility must be defined by the actual role and supported by appropriate employer training and policy.

Practical answers

SEMH Support job questions

What does SEMH mean?

SEMH means social, emotional and mental-health needs. In education, these needs can affect regulation, relationships, attendance, behaviour and access to learning.

Is SEMH Support the same as Behaviour Support?

They overlap, but SEMH work places the pupil's emotional and mental-health needs at the centre rather than treating behaviour as an isolated problem.

Do I need mental-health experience?

Not for every vacancy. Relevant behaviour, youth-work, care, mentoring or school experience may transfer when supported by safe judgement and clear boundaries.

Are SEMH roles physically demanding?

Some can be emotionally or physically demanding. Candidates should assess the pupils, environment, support model and any intervention expectations stated in the vacancy.
